Closed for Magic
Staying to the lines of authority is often hard; often a person feels they must rebel against these lines. Even if these means just seeing how many toes they can put over a line, it happens. Taking a break is often needed to forget about these authority figures that protect a person’s life. Don’t always rebel, through teenage years I know it is hard, but just forget sometimes, and move on with a piece of your life that exists without them. Sadly today I am no more then just another rebel. Sorry dear sirs!
“I hate the weekends, always troublesome and ridiculing.” The voices of two ongoing security officials seemed to echo as passersby listened in on their small conversation. Their hushed voices were only amplified by curious minds. Minds that seemed to be stereotypical. The stereotypical teenage brain involves:
Sex, Drugs, Boy, Girl, Get in Trouble, Be an Imbecile.
So the standards for the teenage minds of this particular town weren’t that great, and it didn’t take much to prove these people wrong. But, there sure was a group of people that tried to prove them right. The authority figures for them were no more then a joke, a test of their minds. So this was the test that mattered in life:
Who could get the Sherriff’s badge first?
“I’m with you all the way.” The second officer concluded to the first officer, otherwise known at the second in charge. Everyone knew in this town that is the second in charge was around, the Sherriff wasn’t too far off. She had only learned this little important piece of information a little bit ago from an on going group that seemed to also be taking on this task. The small flyer that had been placed in various places across the town had set the authorities on high alert, and that was the true challenge.
Kammi was almost sure she could finish this task with no more then a twitch of her fingers. Ok, so it probably wouldn’t be that easy, but anyone who knew the real Kammi knew that she could be real cocky when she was in the winning mood. It wasn’t the winning that got her attention, or the 10 munny that came along with it[those cheap teenagers] it was the thrill of it all. Surely enough it wasn’t the guy on the flyer that said he would give a kiss to any female that won, he would be knocked out by the time that happened and involved Kammi.
The row of street lights flickered on one by one, lighting up every shop window and household. The street was filled with various other lights from various assortments of shops, such as the bar/dance club or the local super mart, where everything was sold 24-7. The liquor store had it’s bright lights shining over everyone that dared to pass by, preventing any underage kids from coming in without someone realizing. The large club, its music blaring a loud as possible without breaking someone’s ear drums, echoed out into the streets as Kammi thought about entering. The music and various others inside attracted more then just the two officers. The streets seemed to contain a few more then needed.
Kammi wrapped her arms lightly around her stomach as she thought this might be her last time to rebel as a teenager, or so her panicking mind said. She watched the two officers walk together, and wondered where the Sherriff must be at a time like this. Surely he wouldn’t want to miss anything that was going on tonight, considering something good might go down and he wouldn’t’ want to miss the grand capture. Well, that’s what the teenagers were saying to loar him down.
Thanks to the flyers tip on the night’s events, they were becoming aware of just about every person that even came near them; due to the fact they thought one of them might try something. Kammi continued to repeatedly look at them like they were no more then another set of rocker boys walking into the club. Their conversation on how much they hated the people they had to watch over continued, with no seem to end, considering they had about a hundred points, and they weren’t even a quarter of the way through.
Ever kid that walked into the club could be spotted eyeing one of the authority figures, each knowing of what might go down. Now, the only thing was,
Who was going to be stupid enough to try and go through with it?
Kammi watched one kid from the corner of her eye, turning himself around the corner, but stopping to ask one of the officers where the sheriff was. And instantly the kid was in for questioning. What was the big deal? It was a badge. Obviously they were taking it more seriously, like they expected something more. Kammi knew it wouldn’t be a good idea to just ask where he was, for all she knew he was hiding in a closest in his bedroom until the night was over.
Kammi had kept her hoody down, in order to keep the authorities from suspecting her in this whole thing. She didn’t want to become a main suspect. Her skinny jeans clung to her used ruffed black heeled boots, and made her look like just about everyone else here. No child seemed to stand out amongst the crowd. So how were the authorities supposed to decipher them out? So that was the hint to the game.
Just blend in.
And thus the game continues.
Kammi turned her back to the two officers and headed into the club, where she might be able to manage a trick or two, or maybe get some information. She liked this game, surely she would start one in Traverse Town sometime.

How very strange.
What a strange world, he thought as he gazed at one of the many posters advertising the "game". All you had to do, it said, was steal some Sheriff's badge. You'd get 10 munny (wow, they didn't mess around with those rewards did they?) if you managed to get the little badge.
He didn't consider the prospect of 10 munny all for himself for long. Teenagers, he knew from experience, didn't care for that munny at all. Rather they would all try to snatch the badge away simply for the glory that followed. A teenager didn't care if the act was stupid so long as they got what they wanted. He wasn't a teenager any longer, now he was a young man. Nineteen! Supposedly, at such an age one was to be grown and already learn all those silly lessons they implanted in your brain when you were small.
And did Dusk ever learn any of those lessons? Nope, not at all. He was still a wonderful liar, the best in his trade, and he didn't like to share and he surely wasn't kind if it didn't benefit him in some way. Oh, he was probably older than the teenagers that flocked around the posters and waited anxiously for someone to grab that badge, but he wasn't as mature for sure. However, when his mind drifted to the prospect of, perhaps, grabbing that badge himself he quickly shot the idea down. No matter what was true he felt he was just a tad bit more mature than that!
However, this sort of thing was what he did best. Dusk had lied countless times, making his whole life up in a matter of minutes, lavishing the lies with lovely details. He had stole many hopes and dreams from other more helpful members of society. Stealing a silly badge would be nothing compared to that! In all honesty it wasn't as though some policeman or whatever could keep him here. He could pluck the badge from the Sheriff's grasp, give it to someone else, and leave.
Such a simple plan! Why not go through with it? It'd been quite some time since he had the pleasure of doing something like this. When was the last time he gifted himself with a mere moment of thrill? Ever since... well, not for a long time. Stealing a little badge. It wasn't a crime, it was just a badge.
With that, Dusk's jade eyes scanned the ever growing crowd. He didn't see anyone at all who could be that elusive Sheriff. All he could see were a good many teenagers milling toward the nightclub in which he could still hear the music throbbing in the streets. He did blend in rather perfectly and that was on accident. His black hair, messy as ever, didn't seem to draw an eye and his pale composed face looked much like everyone else's-there but nothing interesting. Even his clothes were mundane, a black cotton zip-up jacket tossed over a white tee, black pants, and equally black shoes. Fate had wanted him to do this, it seemed. He was just so perfect for the job!
But where the heck was that Sheriff? How annoying it was to have a job, but you could not complete it for the person you needed was lost. Dusk assumed that the Sheriff would go into the most crowded place, for there his badge was in the most danger and a capture more likely. With this thought in mind he pressed on to the nightclub. However, he must have been engrossed in his thoughts, for he bumped into Kammi just as he was entering the nightclub himself.
"Oh my, I'm sorry. Are you alright?" He asked, looking to Kammi with concerned green eyes. And then another thought occurred to him, "Do you know where the Sheriff might be? Aren't you going for the badge too?"
Wow, he was good at this acting stuff. Oh yeah, he was going to be the one to get that badge. Or so he thinks.

The bright lights of the club that flooded into the darkened streets, only lit by the small street lights every 20 feet of so, welcomed all, bringing in kids like they were hypnotized or brainwashed. Just watching the teenagers seemed mesmerizing, not only to the kids but to the authorities as well. Kammi took her first few steps in the direction of the club, digging her hands into the pockets of her hoody, so that her arms were almost straight with the bagginess. More then a few teenagers had taken on this style of bagginess and casual dress, although some of the girls walking into the club could be seen with skirts and dresses, but nothing too fancy.
Just as Kammi began to enter the club, blaring music, lights and all, she felt a shove on her back, not a shove but an accidental push. The brush of the shoulder felt harder, and almost threw her off balance, she was just able to push one hand in front of her and push her back up like she had never lost her footing. She stood up straight once more and ruffled her hair, like she was shaking off the moment.
“Hey watch i-” But before she could mumble out the rest of the sentence the boy was apologizing and asking if she was alright. He was fast at the mouth, or maybe she was just a bit slow. But, either way, she was fine and it didn’t maybe. “Yeah, I’m fine.” She said like any teenager with an attitude problem. What would happen when Kammi turned 20? The picture ran shivers down her spine like it was a haunted picture. It was pretty scary, she would be a pretty immature 20-year-old. But wasn’t it kind of like a rotation? In teenage years you start out like your supposed to act stupid, and then by 19 your supposed to be a little more responsible, and then by the time your twenty your at the bottom again. A different level, but all the same, you’re the amateur of the twenties.
The kid, before she could say anything else, on either of their behaves, had started talking about the games. So everyone really did know about it, and everyone was getting in on it. This kid was just another looking for that dirty little Sheriff, hiding away from everyone. Dusk was being pretty straight up about the whole thing, well also Kammi wasn’t exactly an authority figure that represented fear and told him to just shut up. She was just another girl that was going on with a little fun.
The song changed to a fast paced techno that a few people were lagging behind to rush inside. It got Kammi to tap her toe for a second, before returning to Dusk, “You in on it too? Looks like it really is everyone.” Kammi took one hand out of her hoody pocket, “I was just heading inside to see if I could find him. Not many people have had any luck, but maybe I’ve just been looking in the wrong areas.” Somehow Kammi felt like all of a sudden she was taking this all a little too seriously. It was just a game, but a much more fun game, it was a scavenger hunt. She could only imagine the things they could add to the list. Oh it could be so much fun!
Kammi listened to the song echo through her ears and she stopped for a moment, before she began to slowly tap her foot. “Hey, how about this…come on inside with me and we can look, we’ll be…allies?” She wasn’t sure if that was the right word to use, but basic enough they could cover more ground and find the Sheriff faster. Oh, and they could split the munny prize right down the middle, five munny each, and Dusk could have the kiss if he worked that way.
“By the way, name’s Kammi…” She looked over his blend in teenage look, scuffed up hair, black clothes; she couldn’t point out a name that would spread him out as unique. Well, she couldn’t depict a single name that would go with him. Maybe it was just the feel of today.
Quickly enough Kammi gripped his wrist, and began to pull him towards the entrance to the club. The club was one of those ‘no alcohol’ places, and that was why all these teenagers were allowed in. No one below the age of thirteen could enter though. It was a perfect location for something to fo down, and that was the reason for the guards.

He watched Kammi, as she called herself, with curious eyes. Obviously, everyone was in this game. Ah well, it made things interesting. While his conscious was pleading he not go through with such childish antics his heart was thudding with excitement. Yes, it'd been far too long since he did anything for himself and today he would play one quick game and be gone. Simple, right?
When Kammi suggested they be allies Dusk seemed delighted at the notion. While he didn't look happy at all (he looked composed and just a tad bit at ease actually) he thought the idea of allies was wonderful. He never had a real ally in his life before. Yes, he had plenty of friends before (though in these days he was very friendless) but never an ally. Someone he could depend on in this little mission of their's.
"Sure, I'd love to be... allies." And for once he was telling the truth. Wow. "Oh, I'm Dusk. Nice to meet you Kammi. And, if I was a Sheriff and there were posters all around declaring a prize if some teenagers could steal my badge I'd certainly go into the very place all of these teenagers would go as well. It seems like a fine place to make a capture, don't you agree?"
Yes, of course it made sense that the Sheriff would be there. Right where he could capture anyone trying to steal his badge and make a message at the same time. The place was certainly filling up fast, teenagers flocking to the club as though it was a beacon in the middle of a vast empty ocean. If he caught someone, in front of so many teenagers eager to try and steal that badge too, the point would be clear: Try and steal my badge and you'll get caught too. But what if he wasn't anywhere at all and was somewhere safe and hidden? He was mentally disappointed at the thought.
At once he felt a thin hand clasp onto his wrist and drag him inside. Kammi was obviously ready to get this game started. Suddenly he could decipher the lyrics of the bouncy techno tune in which was oozing from the club as though it mixed with the air itself. He found himself walking to it's beat and felt the rush if adrenaline. He tingled with excitement and at the thought of capturing this silly badge with Kammi. Energy was present and he was ready to go.
"So, Kammi, what does this Sheriff look like?" He asked, raising his voice as to be heard above the loud music.

Kammi already wasn’t enjoying the aspect of this game where you had to actually search for the Sheriff, and what was more was that she didn’t know what he even looked like. Surely enough Kammi hadn’t done her full share of research on the subject. More investigation would be required if she was really in it to win.
After not giving an answer to Dusk for a few minutes, having begun one of a series of daydreams where she imagined what the Sheriff looked like. She really had just assumed that his badge would be enough to give him away, like a big shining light on his chest that read ‘Sheriff’ in big bold letters that would catch anyone’s eye. So maybe she was just a bit off, and was truly unprepared so far. Kammi cursed under her breath, just low enough she thought Dusk wouldn’t be able to decipher what she was saying. It was a good thing she had an ally to keep her a little more on track with her task.
Kammi let out a small laugh that was more out of embarrassment then anything else as she ran her hand down the back of her neck and dropped it to her side once more. “Well…it would seem I forgot that bit of information.” She seemed a little discouraged at her lack of information, but she picked up her place with an idea, “We’ll just have to ask some people around here, if any are willing to give their valuable information away.” She said over the music. It was expected that any information they gained wouldn’t be free, teenagers took opportunities like this, soaking in all their information, to sell it off to some other teenagers that needed the information. Kammi didn’t want to get too tied up in one of those situations though.
Through the crowded club Kammi wasn’t willing to give up Dusk’s wrist, if they got split there was a good chance they wouldn’t find each other again for sometime. Kammi was definitely not going to lose ground now, while she was already behind. Kammi’s finger shot up like her life depended on it, pointing to a small round table with a group of three boys and two girls. This precaution made it so that she knew she wasn’t barging in on a date, which would probably mean they weren’t in the races, and they all had that casual look to them, like they were ready for anything. Or maybe these were just Kammi’s precautions she took around others. “I’m going to ask them.”
Without much of a sound from Dusk she began to pull him along towards the table to the right, just off the dance floor. Kammi, being the most familiar she could, sometimes she could be intimidating, but never distant any more, approached the group of seemingly friends. “Hey, do you mind if I ask you guys a question? Well actually two?” The group of them snapped to attention to look at Kammi, and the boy just behind her, her hand loosening on his wrist.
“First is free, second is charged.” Kammi nodded, these guys at least weren’t foolish.
Asking for appearance might be best, because then they could at least search for him with some idea of what they were looking for, current location might be a little off though. “What does the Sheriff look like?” Making sure her words didn’t throw her off and make them rip her off.
They looked to each other, like they had planned each of their answers out, and one by one they each gave their answer.
“Tall.”
“Fit.”
“Attentive.”
“Tan.”
“Middle-aged.”
She had stepped right into it. She had known two of those descriptions, and two others she had suspected. This didn’t help her much, the only knew thing she got was that he was tan. Screw this man. Kammi turned to Dusk, hoping he would have an idea, because no matter how cocky she was, everyone ran out of ideas at some point.

Kammi didn't answer his question and simply gave a little cough. Dusk blinked at this knowing full well that Kammi had no idea herself. Well, it was just time to become a team member and help! Yes, it was time to be a team player!
...Now how did one go about doing that?
Not that he had to ask because Kammi was dragging him through the crowd once more saying something about questioning teenagers. Dusk knew the plan was fruitless, because people and ask were in the same sentence. Considering the fact that 95% of the people in here were teenagers he was sure nothing would come of it. However, he didn't voice this seeing as Kammi was already at the table negotiating.
They were indeed teenagers, cunning ones too. They had agreed to Kammi's compromise and had given vague answers that no one could use. Dusk's composed face suddenly looked annoyed. At one point in his short life he had to find certain people as well and often asked others if they'd been seen. Dusk was exceptional at negotiating with these innocents. Thanks solely for weapons and threats. Here though, right next to Kammi and over something much more trivial, he wasn't willing to submit to such "negotiating". Though, it was tempting, he'd admit that.
Kammi was looking at him, waiting for a plan. He supposed beating the crap out of these teenagers was out of the question so he plowed through the rest of his plans. Now, Dusk found that finding someone of any importance was relatively easy. Lying was usual the foundation of hunting down a victim. But, today, Dusk had a better plan. There was no doubt in his mind that the Sheriff was here, in the most crowded place of all, and he knew the man was here to keep justice at bay. So, what was the best way to get a cop out of the shadows?
Commit a crime, duh.
It was risky considering the fact that if they did commit a crime another cop could come rather than the Sheriff. Even then, though, they could see their uniform and make this search easier. But, wouldn't the Sheriff want to make a statement to everyone else and come himself? Even if the cops did come, and the Sheriff wasn't among them, Dusk was good at getting away. It came with experience.
"Well..." He turned from the teenagers and looked to Kammi. "We could try to lure the Sheriff out of his spot-by committing a crime... nothing big, of course, just something to get him to come here." He said this all in a low whisper, to make sure no one could eavesdrop.
