The sky above Traverse Town was peaceful and serene as usual. But outside the gigantic, wooden doors a muffled rumble not unlike thunder could be heard. If anyone was paying attention to nighttime sky they could see a bright start blink out from existance. Another world had been lost to the roaming plague known as the heartless.
The large doors of the First District parted open just enough for a small figure to emerge. A girl, no older than 14, was hunched over at the threshold. Her lavender hair was frizzled in a ponytail and sweat streaked down the sides of her pale face. The girl was hunched over like an ape due to the violet shield that was attached to her left wrist. The shield was an odd shape that looked more likely to be a double bladed axe minus the staff. In her right hand there is some type of sword of black and purple, fashioned to resemble a dragon wing. Out of breath, the girl pulled herself into the town with the grinding screeches and vibrant sparks of her gear being dragged at her sides.
Dark blue eyes took in her surroundings as she did her best to remain calm. The cobblestone streets are quiet and nearly empty. A shadow here and there moved in the distance. Every time she saw such movement her tired arms lifted her weaponry before giving out within seconds and clanged to the ground. Black boots dragged her athletic frame, clad in black pants and a blue, sleeveless tunic, to a stone plantbox with a young, healthy tree. She sat down with a grunt before propping her shield and sword against the wall of the box and then went back to taking in her surroundings. Her breathing returned to a steady rhythm and her body was revelling in the rest. But panic and sorrow could not be shaken as she began piecing the recent events with those from nearly a decade ago.
"Not again...."

In a nearby alley a Corridor of Darkness opened, a tall figure wearing purple and gold armor emerging cautiously. He sighed in relief as his feet rested on solid ground again and closed the portal with a flick of his wrist. His training had taken far shorter than he expected, but was also much tougher than anticipated.
He quickly moved from the alley into a small plaza, scanning the area purely out of habit for Heartless or Nobodies. Satisfied, he removed his helmet to reveal short, golden hair, matted from the helmet but still partially spiked. He looked around again, this time with his Auric Sight, and his violet eyes fell on an aura behind a tree across the way.
One look was enough to show the exhaustion and wariness of whoever was over there. With a small flash he allowed his armor to vanish, showing dark blue jeans, a maroon T-shirt, and black boots underneath. He started toward the person slowly, arms out to be as non-threatening as possible. Once he was halfway across the plaza his keen ears picked up a small whisper. "Not again..."
He took a few more steps, making more noise than usual in hopes of being noticed, then called out. "Are you all right? Do you need help?"

The teen's head was hung and her eyes half-lidded. Fatigue was just about to put her body at rest until the shuffling footsteps snapped her back to attention. Out of instinct, the girl grabbed the hilt of her blade but did not move it from it's spot. Her head lifted to view the man before her as well as his surroundings. Sh gathered that he was lone but she would keep her eyes and ears open for now.
"I...I don't know," she said in a tired voice. "But I do need answers. Who are you?" she asked with eyes narrowing slightly. Her fingers rapped once along her blade's hilt and the green gem between the hilt and blade flashed once as a warning.

David was only mildly surprised to find a young teen girl on the other side of the planter. After all, he had just fought alongside several teens not two week before. His right hand flexed when she reached for her blade, but he kept his keyblade away when she didn't move it.
Her obvious suspicion made him sigh softly, but he tried to be as calm as possible. "I am a mercenary of sorts. If I get to know you a little better I may tell you my name, but for now you can call me Mizan." He caught the glow of the gem and stiffened, but it seemed that it was only a warning and he relaxed again. "I just got to this world after training for a while, and I noticed your aura and was concerned."

Her eyes remained fixated on him as he spoke and shifted just slightly to read his body language. After assessing his tone and words she slowly slid her hand away from her sword but kept it nearby just in case. Shoulders once rigid now lowered and relaxed as she straightened up a little.
"Mizan the mercenary," she repeated softly. It was barely above a whisper and seemed more for herself. When he mentioned arriving to this world her head tilted and she looked up at him with confusion clear on her face. "Wait, so you have been to other worlds? You travel to them freely? Do you know about the shadows then?" With each question her voice grew louder and quicker. Her breath picked up again and the adrenaline returning to her was evident as she now sat at the edge of her seat, anxiously waiting for the answers.

David sighed again as he moved in front of her and sat a few feet away. He still couldn't sense any Heartless or Nobodies, so they were safe for now. "Yeah, I've been traveling the worlds since my own fell to the Heartless, most likely what you're calling shadows. They are the darkness in people's hearts made real, and their only goal is to take as many hearts as possible. That includes the hearts of worlds, if the keyhole isn't sealed."
He took in her aura as he spoke, noticing how anxious she was. "I'm guessing you just got here from another world, right? Traverse Town tends to be where quite a few people end up after their worlds are lost." He paused for a moment, remembering another talk two years ago just like this. Only, HE had been the one asking questions, and it was Radiant Garden instead of Traverse Town.
A portal appeared off to the left, a Soldier Heartless appearing from its depths. Before it could even land David's keyblade was through its head, having been thrown while he was still sitting. He looked over as it disappeared, noting with some confusion the tattered remains of a sheet of paper before even that dissolved into nothing. Shrugging, he called his keyblade back and dismissed it as the Soldier's heart floated up into the night sky.
"That was a Heartless, but they normally don't show up alone like that. There's probably more coming. I have a room in a hotel not far from here if you want to rest up a bit." He stood slowly and offered his hand to the girl.

As she listened to him her face relaxed but some confusion still remained. His words sunk in deep while she thought back to the last time this had happened. A lot of things began to make sense and yet she could hear thousands of new questions fill her head. The one thought she was able to focus on was how Mizan referred to this world as one where the survivors tend to end up. It was this thought that had her eyes light up for a brief moment. Ryo thought about the friend she had back home, her real home. Could Sasha have been brought here all those years ago? Could she even still be here after so long?
Ryo's thoughts were interrupted when the soldier heartless appeared. Before her hand could even flinch to her blade the heartless was destroyed in a quick and awe-inspiring display by the mercenary before her. Her mouth fell open and her breath was stuck in her throat as she replayed the event over and over in her mind to make sure what she saw what she thought she saw. The girl's eyes tried to study the strange blade he had used before watching the heart float up to the sky. Finally her head turned back to Mizan and looked upon the hand that was offered to her.
She was weary at first but seeing as though her options were limited she took the man's hand.

David pulled the girl to her feet and made sure she was stable before turning and pointing a little ways down the road. "There's the hotel." He walked slowly, hoping she could keep up, but still managed to walk through the door only a few minutes later. He crossed the lobby without looking around; it wasn't anything special and he had seen it every night for two weeks now.
About halfway down the hall of rooms he stopped and summoned his keyblade again. He pointed it at the lock and a small beam of light connected the two momentarily before the door opened with a soft click. He dismissed the crystal blade again as he opened the door. "Things locked with keyblades can only be unlocked by other keyblades. It's a rather useful security trick."
Inside was a simple room, consisting of a small desk and chair near the door on the left, a bed by the window at the far wall, and a small chest of drawers to the right. A door by the far end of the chest was slightly ajar, revealing a small bathroom beyond. He gestured to the bed in invitation, then sat in the chair himself. "It isn't much, but please make yourself comfortable."

Ryo pulled herself up with Mizan's help and picked up her sword and shield. The shield was slipped onto her back and the sword attached to her belt by a leather strap. During their walk she was quiet while she took in the sights. When they reached the hotel her eyes took interest in the paintings on the wall of the hallway. Just as she was starting the one entitled "Bald Mountain" the light from Mizan's keyblade stole her attention. She took this opportunity to really study it- noting the design an questioning how such a blunt yet beautiful object to kill something so deadly so quickly.
Once inside the room it took her last fibers of strength to resist leaping for the bed. Thankfully Mizan offered it to her right away and she plopped herself down with a happy sigh. "So these keyblades seem to be something special. I'm guessing it takes someone just as special to have one, am I right?"

David grinned slightly at the teen's contented sigh, then summoned his keyblade yet again. "I'm honestly not sure what it takes to earn one. Mine came to me a year ago, after I finally let go of my old dreams from before my world fell. That's why it's called the Shattered Sunset."
He dismissed it again before continuing his explanation. "I've heard that most get one from a Keyblade Master in some sort of inheritance ceremony, but I've never seen one done. As for the keyblades themselves, each one has its own abilities. There are a few that they all share, such as being able to lock or unlock anything and the ability to summon them at will."
Right about then his stomach decided to protest rather loudly, causing him to chuckle in embarrassment before pulling out a protein bar from the desk. "Sorry, I haven't eaten in about twelve hours." He quickly pulled a second one out and tossed it on the bed. "They taste a little odd, but they are pretty good at keeping you full for a while." He pulled open his and bit off a chunk, swallowing before he spoke again. "So, what's your story, if you don't mind me asking? I'll be happy to answer any other questions you have, but it'll help if I know what you do."

Ryo leaned forward to study the keyblade once more. As she listened to Mizan's story she tried to make sense of everything but felt like there were still so many puzzle pieces missing. "So keyblades lock and unlock just about everything and there are masters for them. What does a keyblade master do then?"
Her question was set aside in the moment when she hears Mizan's stomach. Her own face flushed when her gut mimicked the hungry growl. She took the protein bar from the bed and looked it over before taking a bite. It's not like she hadn't eaten in awhile. To her it felt like only minutes ago she had finished her dinner before the heartless came. But fighting them off had taken their toll on her and she was grateful for the food. "Mm, thanks," she said before finishing the last bite.
She thought about Mizan's question while staring at the empty wrapper in her gloved hand. After taking a minute to organize her thoughts she took in a slow breath and released it with her answer. "Well my name is Ryo. Just about an hour ago I was fighting for my life against those heartless and by some miracle I was brought here. The funny thing is though- that this isn't my first time dealing with them. The world that was taken from me wasn't my home- just the world I wound up on after the heartless took my real home world when I was a kid."

David listened to her short tale quietly, then nodded when she was done. "Nice to met you Ryo. My real name is David Talec, by the way. You can call me that or Mizan." He shifted slightly in the chair as he threw his wrapper in the trash. "It seems to me that the most likely people to survive a world falling are the ones that are fighting when it happens. Only three of us made it off of our world when it fell, and we were all fighting. You've got a very strong heart to have made it twice though."
He stood and stretched a little, then ran his hand through his hair. It was obvious he had done it numerous times, as even without a mirror he soon had his hair fully spiked again. He turned back to Ryo and leaned against the wall in thought. "As for what Keyblade Masters do, I have no idea. I've never met one, and one one person I know ever has either."

Ryo played with the wrapper absent mindedly as she listened. "That makes sense I suppose. My last world didn't really have a lot of fighters, just some stupid scientists....serves them right," she muttered the last part and squeezed the wrapper in her fist until it shook. For a flash of a moment she felt herself going to a dark place but she caught herself and shook herself out of it. "And thanks...David. I guess I'm pretty lucky to have been found by you here."
She took in a slow breath and looked out the window in the sky. As she thought about it she realized she had been on three differee worlds now but the sky looked the same on all of them. Were worlds really so close together? Is traveling between them not all that hard? Her mind lingered on David's words about the strong of heart before she looked back over to him. The question was a long shot buf she had to at least ask. "So you've traveled worlds for some time now right? Did you ecer come across a girl about my age- a little older even. She's kinda tall for her age Nd has black hair and blue eyes."

David shook his head briefly in response, then looked out the window himself. "I haven't seen her myself, but that doesn't mean that she isn't out there somewhere. My home world is about three hours by ship from here, but I ended up in Radiant Garden, nearly two hours the opposite direction. My sister ended up on Olympus Colosseum, even further away, and Jason's never told me where he ended up."
He sighed and sat in the chair again as a few memories came back. "The worlds are pretty spread out, but when one falls the survivors can show up just about anywhere. It's just more likely for them to end up here. I'm sure you'll find her eventually though. It took me a year to find Jennifer. Jason just showed up one day two months after that. The key is to never give up hope." He looked over at Ryo again, then spoke once more. "I guess the big question is what are you going to do now?"

The girl lowered her head a bit after David said he hadn't seen her friend. But he was right, she couldn't lose hope and if she hadn't after all these years, why should she now? After he asked what her next step was from here she was silent for a bit. She thought about what he had told her about his situation and considered her options. "Well, I know there is a lot I want to do but a lot of things I need to figure out. I know I want to find my friend. I haven't seen her since we were kids but it would nice to see her again and know she's okay. And then..." she bit her bottom lip and looked to David for a moment. So far he seemed trustworthy and he has been a great help to her so far. Ryo was nervous about asking the next question- or at least his questions that may follow. "David...how much do you know about magic and science?" she asked innocently enough.

Ryo's sudden question surprised David, more for how she said it than why. Her aura in particular showed that she was VERY nervous about something, so he chose his words carefully. "That depends on what parts of magic and science you mean. I know quite a bit about the basics of magic, but can't use most spells unless they use Light or Darkness. As far as science goes, I'm a decent mechanic and computer programmer but that's about it."
He hesitated for a moment, then added a bit more. "Most of what I know revolves around meditation and inner energy. Technically that isn't part of magic or science, but it forms the core of nearly every ability I have. It makes you look inside, find your own power, and learn to harness it. Does that help any?"

As Ryo listened her her eyes widened and her entire body slowly perked up. It seemed the the more he went on about his knowledge and skills, the more hope and excitement filled the girl's eyes. It was hard for her not to grin from what could come but she did her best to keep calm and to not look too anxious. "So in theory- do... do you think you could help someone who has been locked out from using their magic? Like if they could use magic before but it got sealed away within them?" By now Ryo was on the edge of the bed, hands gripping the comforter as her body leaned forward in anticipation of his reply.

David rubbed his chin thoughtfully for a minute, trying to remember his old master's explanation. It had been years since he had really though about the other uses of Spirit energy, not since he started using it as a catalyst. Finally, he looked over at Ryo again, looking much closer at her aura. He could tell something was off, but without more information he wouldn't know for sure. "It's possible that it could help, but it depends on how it was sealed. If it was something someone else did it will be far more difficult to fix. Do you remember exactly what happened, or what part of you was affected by the seal?"
