Ryo wrapped her arms lightly around herself as she recalled the day it happened. It was a memory she hated revisiting but she understood it was necessary to help David help her.
"I use to be able to use magic. Nothing strong just little elemental spells. But when I arrived to the second world They took that away from me... I was hooked up to this machine. I remember being strapped in and having all sorts of things connected like wires on my head. There was something pointed at me that sort of looked like a drill but it had a needle. It...it was pretty big from what I remember of it. I had my eyes closed for awhile but I remember it made this loud, high-pitched buzz and there were some bright lights. It felt like something was shot into me but something that's hard to describe- like an electric shot I guess."
By then Ryo realized her breathing had increased and she felt cold sweat chilling the back of her neck. The girl took a moment to calm herself before she continued. "Since then I haven't been able to use magic. The best I can do is channel through my sword but... I think that's only because of the orb," she said while giving a nod to the blade. As if it had heard her, the orb gave a small flash like a wink- as though it was aware it had been mentioned.

David's eyes widened in horror as Ryo told him about what could only be some sort of twisted experiment. He was appalled that anyone would do that, especially to someone so young. He wanted to say something, anything, to comfort her, but she managed to calm herself down before he could. He did notice the small flash from the orb.
Once he had processed everything she had said he looked at the sword, then at her, and then back to the sword. They were clearly linked somehow, but the most important thing was that that orb could help. "I'm still not sure what exactly happened, but if you can use small amounts of magic through the orb then that's where we should start. I may be able to find the seal and help you fix it that way."
He suddenly remembered the state she had been in not long ago, barely able to stand. "If we try something before you rest a little you could hurt yourself though. Is there anything else you'd like to know while we wait?"

Ryo studied his face after she had told him about the process. She remembered how the one in charge had kept trying fo reassure her that it was for the best; that it would not only keep others safe but her as well. Nothing he had said made her feel like it was right and now seeing the look on David's face confirmed it to be so. But as much as she hated that memory she couldn't help but feel like some tgpe of relief. She had never told anyone what had happened until now and it felt good to finally share it.
The talk of using the orb brought back the hopeful gleam in her eyes and her body straightened up again. "That sounds like a good idea. And you're probably right about vetting some rest first. Maybe just a... a short nap," she said with a yawn breaking up her words. She couldn't fight it anymore. Ever since she arrived she wanted to just go to sleep but now the thought of getting her magic back was conflicting with her body's want for rest.

David smirked slightly as Ryo yawned and mentioned a short nap. A quick glance at the hanging clock told him it was nearly midnight, and most people would be asleep for hours yet. Her reluctance to fall asleep amused him greatly, reminding him of himself when he was younger. "Don't worry so much. Your magic isn't going anywhere, and neither am I."
Hoping she'd take his advice would only go so far, and he had had a rough day himself. He chuckled softly and muttered a little as he got more comfortable. "Jennifer would kill me if she found out I've been training there..." The chuckling ceased, his eyes closed, and his breathing became regular and deep. To most people, he would appear in deep sleep, but they would be very mistaken. In his trance state, his mind's eye expanded to fill the room, keeping watch even as his mind and body rested.

It was hard for her to wait another day but she knew it would be for the best. She was just about to slip off of the bed so David could have it, but paused when she heard him mutter something. It peaked her curiosity but she wouldn't be able to ask about it since he seemed to have fallen asleep. Ryo felt guilty for taking the only bed yet noted that he seemed comfortable enough in the chair for the night. After removing her boots and gloves she curled up slightly and hugged the pillow to her. Her eyes eventually closed and she slipped into a light, and hopefully restful sleep.

Time held no meaning within the trance, but his awareness included the clock, allowing David to keep track of time. Shortly after six he ended his restful meditation, feeling like he had slept well for ten hours. His clothes said otherwise, stiff and wrinkled from the previous few day's training. With nearly silent grace he stood and stretched, working feeling back into his arms and legs, then gathered a change of clothes and headed for the bathroom.
David shut the door as quietly as he could, but the noise of the shower would most likely wake his guest before too long. He quickly showered, invigorated and refreshed by the cool water he preferred, and withing fifteen minutes was toweled and dressed again. The outfit was similar to before, with a navy blue shirt to replace the maroon one, but this time he added a black leather belt with a silver and onyx yin-yang symbol as the buckle, along with black leather fingerless gloves and a silver necklace with a pendant that matched the belt buckle. Fully prepared, he stepped back into the main room.

It may have been a sense of peace or perhaps just exhaustion but Ryo had slept well that night. The sound of the shower had indeed been the thing to wake her, making the girl's eyes slowly open. As soon as her vision cleared she shot up and looked around the small room while recalling the events of the day before. The first thing she did was check to make sure her sword and shield were where she had left them. Once she saw they were fine she relaxed and looked over to the bathroom where she assumed David was. And just in time to answer her question, David stepped out and back into the room.
"Good morning," she said in a voice still raspy from sleep. "It is morning, right?"

David smiled softly as he nodded, then looked at the clock. "It's as close to morning as it gets on this world. Eternal night tends to mess with your internal clock a little, after a while." He tossed yesterday's cloths into a small Corridor of Darkness which led to his hamper back on Radiant Garden, then closed it again.
He sat in his chair again once he was done and looked back at Ryo. "You may want to stretch out a little. You didn't move the whole night after all." Her aura certainly appeared more vibrant, so he was sure she slept well. "We'll find something to eat once you're ready."

"Eternal night?" she asked before sitting up more to look out the window. Upon seeing the dark sky she looked over to the clock and twisted her eyebrows in confusion. But she shrugged it off and her thoughts on the matter were replaced when she watched David casually open a small Corridor to toss out his dirty clothes. Her eyes widened in shock not just from the act of magic but how casually he had done so.
Ryo's thoughts were interrupted once again when David suggested some stretching before they went on with the day. With just a nod in response the girl got up and went through her usual stretching routine, albeit a bit quicker than usual. Today was the first step towards getting the use of her magic back and she could hardly wait. As soon as she was done with her stretching she put on her boots and gloves and grabbed her sword and shield with a smile she couldn't hold back.
"Ready."

David nodded once she grabbed everything, then stood and pushed the chair in. "Right, our first stop is First District for some food." The hotel was still empty when he emerged into the hall, but he was far too used to that to let it give him pause. Still, he watched the doors closely while he waited for Ryo to join him. Once she did, a light tap of his keyblade in the door sealed it again.
As they walked, David started explaining a little of his own past. "The reason I can use things like that portal so easily is that I was born with control of Light and Darkness. On my world everyone was born controlling an element, but I'm the first in recent history to control two." He grimaced as he continued. "The only problem was that Light and Darkness tend to explode if they touch. That's why I had to learn meditation, so I could create a buffer between the two."
His explanation stopped as he entered the First District, where there were a few people at this hour. There weren't many, but enough to make it difficult to talk privately. David led the way to the small cafe next to the main square, and sat in his usual spot near the corner. "This way I can see anything happening or anyone getting close. Here comes the waiter, go ahead and order whatever you want. It's my treat, since I got a LOT of munny during my training."

As Ryo walked with David she was trying to adjust to the small amount of people. She was use to the large crowds of the city and here she was feeling quite exposed. Although her shield was on her back and her sword fastened at her side, her hands twitched every so often at the strangest sound or movement. This recent heartless attack had left her quite on edge.
Thankfully David's tale took her mind off of possible attackers and gave her something else to focus on. It was intriguing story and reminded her a bit of her true home world. When he got to the part about light and dark exploding at mere touch she looked up at him with concern. "So what exactly would happen if you went without meditating for a long time?"
Before her question could be answered they arrived in the slightly busier first district. David's sudden silence told her to keep quieg as well while they walked to the cafe. Once at the table she looked about while taking note of David's reasoning for choosing such a seat. "Hm, this is a good idea and a nice view, " she said before picking up a menu. After David gave her the okay fo order anything she raised a brow at him and squeezed her lips together in an attempt to hide a grin. "Alright then, I'll have the waffle plate with blueberries, whipped cream, scrambled eggs with a slice of ham a lots of bacon. Oh and a tall glass of milk please," she added with a sheepish grin and small blush across her cheeks.

David laughed for a moment as Ryo finished ordering, then looked at the waiter himself. "I'll just have two eggs over medium, four slices of bacon, and a water please." The waiter finished writing, assured them that their food would be right out, and quickly returned to the kitchen. David was thankful that there weren't very many people in the cafe itself; none were close enough to hear them talk now.
"Sorry about stopping the conversation earlier. There are quite a few refugees here that think all Darkness is evil, so I don't mention it around strangers." He kept his voice somewhat low, but it could easily be heard from across the table. "To answer your question, I actually don't need to meditate anymore. I used it to gain control of my life energy, which is the actual buffer. A rather useful side effect is that the life energy can be used to combine the two elements. Instead of blowing up, they become an artificial Twilight element."
He noticed the waited returning with their food and paused to thank him before turning back to Ryo. "I'll show you what I mean once we're done here. Merlin's old house past the Third District ought to be a safe enough place for everything."

Once they were alone again, Ryo scooched her chair in closer and lean in a bit so she could hear him easily. "It's okay. Most people I've met don't seem to understand that dark magic isn't evil by default," she said softly in turn. So let me see if I have this right so far: With your life energy you can meld light and dark energy into this new one that you call the Twilight element- right?" Ryo caught the waiter approaching from the corner of her eye and she shot upright with a large grin. She placed her napkin onto her lap and grabbed for her utensils eagerly. The girl had just folded up her ham slice to the point where the whole thing could fit on her fork and she looked back up at David. "Merlin? Who is that?"

David nodded as he cut into his eggs, grinning again at the sight of Ryo's fork. "You seem to have the concept down." He took a bite of his eggs, swallowing before he continued. "Merlin is a rather powerful wizard who lives on Radiant Garden, the world I use as a base. Most of the people there were living on this world until a few years ago, since their world was the first to be overrun with Heartless."
He paused to eat a few more bites, then took a sip of his water. "A Keyblade Wielder named Sora went on a journey right around that time to bring back the worlds, and managed to cleanse Radiant Garden of most of its darkness. I have no idea where he is now, but he may very well be one of the strongest of us."

Ryo had managed to take the whole ham slice and chew it with ease while she listened to him. As she ate she was quick yet not sloppy or lacking in manners. The recent events left her famished but she didn't want to come off rude in front of the young man before her. She had nearly finished her meal when David spoke about Sora.
"So did this Sora restore all the worlds then?" she asked with her eyebrows nearly leaping off of her face in hope. "What's Radiant Garden like? It sounds like a magical place from the way you put it. Have you met Sora?" After Ryo caught herself in having bombarded David with so many questions, she quickly silenced herself with a long drink of her milk. She was hoping this would also hide her flushing, embarrassed face.

David shook his head as he finished his last piece of bacon. "Let's start with you're last question and work our way back. Fist, I've never met Sora, but he has a surprising number of friends across the worlds who tend to mention him after the see my keyblade. Second, Radiant Garden is currently a medium sized town with large cliffs surrounding it. I assume the name came from the abnormally large crystals that are common in those cliffs. Third..."
He hesitated as thoughts of his original home came to him. He took a long drink of water to buy some time, but he doubted he had hidden his emotions completely as he continued. "While Sora did restore most of the worlds the Heartless had taken, that was about three years ago. Any worlds that have fallen since are still lost. Sometimes Nobodies, the body and soul left behind when a Heartless is formed, invade instead." His hands tightened as his tone grew slightly bitter. "Those worlds would be better off lost."

Ryo noticed his hands tighten when he mentioned the nobodies. She wanted to know more about them but decided against asking since it seemed to be a very sensitive subject for him. And if all the worlds that were lost long ago were restored then maybe her home had been too. Then again for all she knew it could have been lost a second time and these nobodies could be swarming it.
After wiping her mouth with her napkin she cleared her throat before speaking up in a more up beat tone, going the change of subject would ease David. "Well I'm done. So it's off to Merlin's house then yes? He won't mind us going there?"

Ryo's voice snapped David back to reality, causing him to jump slightly. "Sorry about that. My world is one of those invaded by the Nobodies now. My best friend, my sister and I may very well be the only three survivors." He smiled again, but it was a little forced. "Yeah, let's go. He won't mind at all, since he doesn't have anything there anymore."
David stood and got the waiter's attention, paying for the meals plus a tip. He walked across the square to the large doors directly opposite the cafe before going through into the Third District. He paid no attention to the empty square or the fountain in the corner, instead slowly moving to a small alley to the left. It was blocked by an odd door with a fire painted on it, but his keyblade proved stronger than the fire-based lock and he walked through. "Here we are. It doesn't look like much, but it's sturdy and no one comes out here, which makes it perfect for us."

Ryo jumped a little as well after David did but it was more from reflex than anything. His explanation had her face soften from it's natural stern look from the sympathy she felt towards him. Although he was older it seemed his losses and struggles were just as fresh to him as her own, even more so; something she'd have to remind herself of from time to time.
Once their meal was paid for she followed him through the town. Before reaching the flame-emblesemed door she tapped David's shoulder and cleared her throat. "Thank you for breakfast, its been a long time since I've had such a great meal."
After David opened the door her eyebrows arched in amazement once more. It would take some time getting use to see acts of magic again so frequently.

David only nodded in response to Ryo's thanks, but he did relax a little after that. Beyond the door was a large cavern with an island at the center of a small lake, atop which was an old stone house. The only way to reach the island was a series of four stepping stones, but they started moving as David approached them. With the ease of many repetitions he hopped from one to the next, until he stood under the arch just before the building and turned to call out to Ryo. "The trick here is timing. Try not to fall in, because there's nothing here to dry you off but a few old blankets."
