"No. What made you think that?"
Neku stopped dead in his tracks after hearing Ombra's question, but he couldn't help it. The guy just ticked him off. Even if Mei trusted him, he didn't.
"Neku... You can try and be a bit nicer..." Mei pouted. "'Kay, sorry, but I've already had enough with that damn curse!" Neku yelled back, scratching the back of his head, "The longer this journey gets, the weirder is becomes. And, honestly, I ain't exactly eager to work with someone who's allies with the Heartless." "Come on! Try to make an effort! You're acting like a child now!"
Mei's chide caused Neku to flinch, noticeably, and start blushing. Pouting, Mei sighed, and turned towards Ombra with naivety and calmness.
"You can ignore him" she said. "H-Hey!"
With that said, Mei proceeded to do what she'd said Ombra could do, and walked towards him. As she did, though, she tripped, and fell onto an open gravedoor, to seemingly dissapear. Neku, shocked, was quick to take action.
"Mei!" he shouted. "...I'm okay!" Mei's voice sounded from what seemed to be the other side of the wall, "It's a teleporter of sorts. Come on, it's safe!"

"Oh, just that-" He didn't finish the sentence before Mei chastised Neku. Ombra blushed a little. He wasn't used to people being on his side. If anything, it was a little uncomfortable for him. He shook the feeling off and continued with the clue hunt. Mei seemed to trust him hopefully Neku would eventually feel the same, or at least be willing to work with him. He also made a mental note to ask about whatever curse Neku was upset about, now didn't seem like an appropriate time.
The next thing he knew, Neku had shouted after Mei. Looking up, he noticed she had disappeared. "...I'm okay!" Her voice seemed to come from the other side of a grave door. "It's a teleporter of sorts. Come on, it's safe!"
Ombra looked over to Neku and gave a shrug before going down into the darkness only to pop out on the other side with Mei.

Neku followed along, trusting Mei's words almost blindly. Now at the other end of the wall, a field greeted his view. Pumpkins of all sizes and shapes were resting, somewhat waiting to be picked up and used. Intrigued, Mei looked aroudn, taking a few steps to have a better view.
The twilit sky was clear, not a single cloud spotting it. The full moon, shining brightly, acted as the only source of light amongst the shadowy world, iluminating the paths along the way.
"From here... Where...?" Mei asked herself aloud, placing one hand on her chin. "Forward, right?" Neku asked, placing both hands on his hips, "Unless you wanna check the whole batch..." "Not really..." Mei shook her head in amusement, "I guess we could go that way" she mentioned, pointing at a gate at the far end of the field, "And see what else lurks nearby. Who knows? Maybe the Spirits are closer than we think."
Mei smiled a bit, before heading over to where she'd pointed out. Exasperated, Neku sighed, only giving in and following, not really checking on Ombra as he did so. Having already made his stance, Neku would be damned if he had to help him, of all people.
Then again, though, Ombra had agreed in helping, so maybe he shouldn't be much of a jerk... And yet, he couldn't help but think the way he did about him.
Mei glanced over at Neku as she walked, a concerned frown written in her expression, and then sighed as she returned her gaze back forward. It wasn't going to be easy whatsoever...
And they were just starting, too!

Ombra stood off to the side awkwardly while the other two decided on which way to go. Mei had been nothing but nice, considering. Neku, on the other hand, had added a level of tension that Ombra was used to. 'Why are people so complicated?'
He followed behind as the pair led the way, keeping an eye out for anything suspicious. Granted, in a place like this, it was easier said than done. "So, any idea what these Spirits are up to? Grand scheme-wise?" The man figured he'd try to make conversation and break the tension as best he could. Plus, if he ever faced these things on his own, he'd like to know what he was up against.

"So, any idea what these Spirits are up to?
Mei turned towards Ombra as he spoke, while Neku simply kept going at his own pace. Ignoring him for the time being, Mei instead focused on leading Ombra on what the pair was aware of. Although it wasn't much, it would help him steer off the dark naivety.
"There's only so much I know, but..." Mei began to explain, "What I know is that the Spirits are looking for a Rift. If they have it within their grasp, they'll grow even stronger than what they are now. Not only that, but they can create Illusions if they have enough power drawn from the Rift."
"We're not here for it, but Neku and I are looking for the Rift in order to close it" Mei continued with a smile, "That way, the Spirits won't be a problem for the people living here. Heartless are a different issue, of course... But I don't think it'll be necessary to deal with them, if you're there to interpret for us."
Beaming with a calm smile, Mei turned back towards the gate. Neku was already there, going through without much care. The field expanded towards a river of sorts, in between a ravine. Neku looked around with some unease, scouting with his eyes in search for possible enemies or allies.
It was still too quiet.
"Something wrong, Neku?" Mei asked, walking towards him. "The silence's killin' me right about now..." Neku replied, "Some noise would be appreciated... Y'know, to see if there's anythin' lurkin' around."
Mei nodded in agreement, looking further around the place. It was too peaceful...

Ombra listened to Mei's explanation intently. For not knowing much, she seemed to know the important things. ''Either way, sounds like this rift is bad.' She didn't seem to mind the fact that Ombra dealt with Heartless. Mei even acted like it would be helpful to them. He smiled sheepishly and adjusted the sleeves of his shirt and the bottom of his vest. "O-oh, yeah. I don't think they'll be a problem."
He met up with Neku at the gate. "Some noise would be appreciated... Y'know, to see if there's anythin' lurkin' around." The teen had a point, back in the RoD silence usually meant that there was an ambush waiting further on. Sure you were safe for the moment, but something was always there. 'This is a different world though. Surely it's not the same, is it?' Ombra decided to air on the side of caution. These two have been in fights before, that was obvious. Following their lead sounded like the best idea.
"Well, the only way we'll know for sure is if we keep moving. Right?" They were here to solve the world's problem, and they couldn't do it by just standing around.

"Well, the only way we'll know for sure is if we keep moving. Right?"
Ombra's comment as he walked by caused Neku by surprise. Even though he wasn't willing to work with him, he had to admit he was fast to get in gear. However, he refused to simply admit that he'd been wrong, unwilling to swallow his pride just for convenience.
Maybe, once after the problem was dealt with, he'd admit it. Right now, it was far too soon.
Mei, noticing this, couldn't help but giggle a bit, before she followed along. She kept glancing about, yet nothing really caught her eye. No enemies, either, seemed to crawl from the shadows, be it Spirits or Heartless. Where were they, then, if not there? Were they purely causing trouble in town, without rime or reason? The thought caused her to frown, unsure on what to look for after all that.
"Ah-Hey!" Neku shouted, "I see a passage~" "A... Passage?" Mei tilted her head.
Neku smirked from where he was, near a camouflaged entrance amidst the shadows. Dark and damp, it was somewhat near the river, leading to who knew where.
"I say we follow this path" Neku voted, confident, "This place's a dead end, anyways." "But... We don't have stuff to light the path..." Mei mentioned uneasily. "Hmm..." Neku rumaged a bit through his pockets, "I still got a couple matches, if that'll help." "Won't they burn immediately?"
Neku hummed a bit more, looking around for something to make a torch of sorts. There were a few trees, but they looked so dead, they either would burn immediately or simply wouldn't work. Turning towards Ombra, Mei tilted her head.
"Do you have something we could use?" she asked, calmly.

Ombra stopped and looked over to where Neku had been. Walking over, the first thing that popped out to him was how dark it was. He doubted that any of them could see into it, let alone navigate effectively.
"Do you have something we could use?" The man patted his pockets and flipped through his tome before briskly shaking his head. "Sorry. My skills are more for fight support, not utility."
He thought for a moment before shaking his head again. 'Even if I manage to keep them from killing any Shadow I summon, there's no guarantee that we'll be able to keep it in sight long enough to follow it out.' Ombra looked to the other two, hoping they had some other plan.

Giving up rather easily, Neku pouted, the small box of matches still clutched in his hand. Up until he seemed to recall a particular something, glancing over at Mei as he did so —much for the girl’s curiosity. Tilting her head, Mei looked confused, wondering just what it was that Neku seemed to have in mind.
And why would it require her, of all people?
“Now that I remember… Can’t you use light magic?” Neku pointed out, “So, shouldn’t you be able to do somethin’ about it?” “Ah —about that, umm…” Mei seemed hesitant, looking away, and fidgeting. “Mei?” “I… Might not be able… Y’know… I’m…” “Doesn’t hurt to give it a shot, right?”
Mei puffed her cheeks, a bit uneasy, but knowing that she would lose an argument against Neku, she decided to just go ahead and try, like the teen had suggested. Both hands cupped over one another, a faint flicker of light began to grown from Mei’s palm, becoming a decently sized orb of pure light —bright to the eye, but not overbearing. However, it only lasted a second before the orb poofed from existence. Neku blinked a bit, and the girl herself looked disappointed.
Was that because of her current form, not being the real on?
“Sorry… But it’s been tough, recently…” Mei admitted. “Since… Since I found you?” Neku asked, receiving a nod, “Why’d you kept quiet, then?” “…I didn’t want to worry you —you were so… happy, back then…” “…” Neku sighed, scratching the back of his head, “Nothing to do now, I guess —we just find a different solution. C’mon.”
Unwilling to give up just yet, Neku looked for an alternative from the passage, his eyes peeled for any hint of another path. There was a small cliff nearby, the edge curled up on itself, and at the end of the chasm, Neku noticed that there was something further up ahead.
Could there be something there, worth investigating? In order to check, though, he had to look further up.
Mei, on the other hand, looked around the patches of pumpkins, trying to distract herself from the previous uselessness. Hands now clutched against her chest, she seemed hesitant to offer any sort of help, not wanting to bother anyone, and instead follow along. Staying near Ombra didn’t seem to bother her, however…
“…Hey, I think I found a way” Neku said, jumping from the small hill formed, “Up ahead, there’s a bridge leading somewhere —bet there’s somethin’ that way, too. Only problem’s gonna get there, see?”
Before the chasm was a large wall. Even if they climbed it all the way up, there was no guarantee that they could make the jump, all three of them. Wondering on how to get past there, a familiar echo of movement would rush near them, various Spirits jumping in for an attack.
Something had triggered them, for sure, since along their movements, there seemed to be a whisper of sorts —faint, monotone and almost inaudible.
“Don’t… You dare…”

Ombra couldn't help but overhear Neku and Mei's conversation, but decided not to say anything. It wasn't his place. He walked a bit into the darkness, trying to see if he could see anything once he entered. 'No dice.' He stepped back out and walked to Mei. Talking with her was easier than most, especially her friend.
Before he could say anything, Neku called them over. Only problem’s gonna get there, see?” Ombra looked at the top of the wall. "Do you think someone could stand on the top of it?" If it was possible, he could use one of his corridors to see what was on the other side. Before anyone could answer, there was a sound of motion nearby.
He could've sworn he heard them speak. "Guys, please tell me you heard that too." He grabbed his tome and cast his Dark Shield on Neku. "I'm gonna stay out of your way and support as I can." He eyed the spirits warily, not sure how to proceed. He'd seen the Heartless fight, he could read them easily, but this was the second fight he had with these "spirits". He felt it was best to leave it to the experts.

The group had taken their stance —with Neku acting as the front-guard, the massive blade firm in his hands, Mei and Ombra would be fighting from afar, be it by shooting spells at the enemies or supporting the others. Both teens seemed unbothered by the prospect, almost as if they’d worked around it countless times before. Charging head-first, Neku cut through the Spirits working on the front line, with Ombra’s Dark Shield protecting him from the most damage.
The Dwarf-like Spirit kept bouncing around, glimmering with a faint light as it seemed to be the supportive member of the Spirits, while both Wolves and Foxes met with Neku head-on. Keeping their distance, the Hawks flying above them perked up at the two casters, one of them charging towards them, while the other looked to the battle going around the hot-headed teen.
Mei met the Hawk’s attack with a swing of her rapier, forcing it to back away. As for Neku, he leapt through the air, heaving the heavy great sword on his shoulder, to then unleash a powerful Downstrike that shook the ground near him —both Wolves and Foxes staggering a bit. Quick to make use of the opening, the teen rushed forward, his sword accurately hitting onto the Spirit’s Emblem —their only weakness.
While 3 shattered into light —1 Wolf and 2 Foxes—, the battle continued on ahead.
“Neku!” Mei shouted, catching the teen’s attention, “That one!”
The girl pointed at the small Dwarf Spirit, the glimmer turning green as the injured Spirits were healed of their wounds, and back to better shape. Neku groaned —he hated magic casters against him. Readying the sword, the teen focused before running towards the Spirit —only for his attack to be blocked by the other stand-by Hawk.
“Grr —back off!” Neku shouted. “Here!”
Bright light gathered near the Hawk that had met with Neku’s sword —the teen quickly backing away at the presence of strong magic. Mei’s Holy spell crashed onto the Spirit, shattering it on impact, and leaving the other Spirit defenseless, open for yet another onslaught.
“…I heard it” Mei told Ombra, glancing his way with a faint hint of worry, “You heard the Spirits talk, right? …Be careful —if they so choose, they might try to lure you to their side with words.”

Ombra did his best to avoid the Spirit's attacks, not wanting to risk summoning another Shadow and making the other two more mad at him. Besides, they had a decent partnership going. That was apparent when Mei pointed out the dwarf's healing magic and Neku acting accordingly.
"You heard the Spirits talk, right? …Be careful —if they so choose, they might try to lure you to their side with words.” The man dodged the hawk dive-bombing towards him. "This is probably a bad time, but I live with Heartless. I'm fairly certain it'll be harder to sway me than they think." He swatted at the hawk spirit as it tried to attack him again. He didn't connect, but he was fairly sure that the hawk would think twice before just diving at him.
The wolf, on the other hand, didn't seem to care. It leaped at Ombra while his back was turned, knocking him to the ground. 'I feel like I deserved this.' He struggled to keep the wolf from doing further damage to him.
Not having much of a choice, Ombra opened his tome. "COME TO ME!" Not having the time or ability to limit the number, all five of his Shadows appeared. Seeing that their summoner was in trouble, the Shadows immediately swarmed the spirit. Jumping and clawing, the Shadows made quick work of the Spirit.
Ombra got to his knees and patted all of them. "Thanks guys, I should be good now. Go home." He waved his hand over the group, and all the Shadows disappeared back to their realm. Standing, he brushed the dirt off his now ruined outfit. He surveyed the field, looking to see how the other two were fairing.

Ombra calling over some Shadows to help him fight worked both for and against him. While they defeated the wolf-like Spirit that had charged at him, it seemed that the other Spirits were aggravated by the Heartless’ presence —immediately focusing on their Summoner. Both Neku and Mei noticed this shift, given that the Spirits all stopped their spread focus and gathered all eyes onto the man in the black suit, to immediately charge after him.
“Disappear! You’re unwelcome! Nuisance!”
The whispers seemed to sound aggravated, annoyed at the sight of Ombra —evidenced by the growls and glares. While Neku’s opponent shifted its focus, it left the teen dumbstruck, unsure on what was happening anymore. Same for Mei —although she’d noticed that Ombra was now a point of focus.
Despite it only being 2, it seemed it didn’t bother them as much.
Whoosh! As the two remaining Spirits decided to attack Ombra, more Spirits decided to join. 2 more wolves alongside a horse, its mane made of fire that burned brightly against the shadows. Unlike the other Spirits, this one had some color —the fire an obvious red and orange, but its remaining body a light orange color, with a tied rope burning at the edges. Its eyes, devoid of life, locked onto Ombra, before charging forward with impressive strength.
Mei flinched, noticing the difference immediately. That Spirit wasn’t a regular one —it was someone’s Familiar. The fact that it was going after them evidenced that they weren’t on the same side as the trio, instead looking for trouble.
Neku rushed forward, blocking the attack with his blade. Both of them staggered at the clash, but the teen didn’t give up. His blade firm in his grip, he lunged forward, attacking thrice in a powerful combo —his Demonic Chaos attempting to create pressure on the battle, which was successful. Choosing to support, Mei chanted Protectga on everyone, ensuring that they wouldn’t take as much damage from the attacks the Spirits were bound to unleash.
“I’ve gotta focus on that Spirit!” Mei thought, uneasy.
If the Familiar was left to its own devices, odds were that another Spirit was in that world as well —a Traitor, most likely. And if they knew anything…
Then odds were they’d stand in their way.

The spirits' words struck a chord with Ombra. He knew people weren't a fan of the Heartless, and he could guess why. But to hear them be blatantly insulted, the only company, the only family he had. that was the last straw. Without thinking he opened his tome again. "A nuisance, eh? He saw the spirits charging towards him, taking steps forward to meet them. "Why don't I show you how bad we can REALLY be?" With the last word, he waved his hand and his Shadows reappeared to clash with the spirits before they could hit him.
The four spirits that clashed with the five Shadows, the one with colors being handled by Neku, seemed to land across from the Heartless. "Alright guys, take these abominations out. Rip them from this realm." His usual demeanor shifted from wallflower to something else. Something twisted and dark. His words seemed to echo like the spirits as a faint aura of darkness surrounded him. The Shadows quivered and leaped forward, slashing and clawing their opponents. The hawk and one of the wolves, having already taken damage before now, melted away as the Heartless sank their claws into them.
The dwarf, now facing a 3 on one, stood almost no chance; and the final wolf Ombra took care of himself. With a hefty smack from Shadow's Fall, the spirit vanished.
Ombra turned to the red spirit, his eyes glowing like his Heartless'. "Kill the red one." The hybrid hissed, his voice now seeming to come from the shadows themselves. His Heartless shivered in response and charged to help Neku.

Mei flinched, feeling the sudden chill of darkness rising from nearby, only to find Ombra calling onto more Heartless with a completely different demeanor. It was as if it wasn’t him anymore, but a different person altogether —someone who she didn’t know nothing about. What caused him to snap? Was it the words the Spirits had said, ordered by someone working in the background, watching? Startled by a sudden fear, the girl found herself in the sidelines, having lost the grip on her rapier and falling down with a loud clank on the ground.
Fending the Wildflame on his own, Neku was shocked to see Heartless charge against the Spirit he’d been fighting, with a faint grimace. Hearing the sound of metal falling onto the ground, the teen turned around only to find Ombra surrounded in darkness. His expression turned towards a scowl, the grip on his sword firmer than ever.
He felt legitimately betrayed, here —even if he was helping out.
The Wildflame stood on its back legs, screeching with clear annoyance as it stomped on the ground, flames following the attack’s wake. It didn’t seem afraid of the Heartless around it, instead far more annoyed —it’d take much more than the meek attacks the Shadows could land. It wasn’t even bothered, engulfed in flames as it charged forward recklessly.
“What!? You think calling on more of your kin will help?!”
The voice echoed again, the tone more evident and even recognizable —the voice of a girl, annoyed with the apparent loss of time. Wanting to get to the point without wasting time on pointless fighting, it seemed the Spirit was getting annoyed. With fire surrounding its figure, instead of remaining solely in its mane, it charged forward towards the group —particularly Mei and Ombra, given that they were so close together.
Neku rushed forward, ignoring Ombra completely and instead going towards them to protect Mei, dropping the sword on the ground and hugging her, bringing her closer towards him to then take her out of harm’s way, leaving Ombra to fend for himself.
“I freakin’ knew we couldn’t trust him!” the teen thought, glaring at Ombra, “Whatever the hell he is, teamin’ up with Heartless is a straight mistake!”

The sound of clattering metal caused Ombra's head to turn. Seeing Mei's reaction, the hybrid was Brought a sense of clarity. Whatever he had done to gain that reaction would have to wait until after the fight. “What!? You think calling on more of your kin will help?!” The annoyance in the spirit's voice was more than apparent.
Ombra watched as Neku ran to protect Mei and the spirit went to charge them both. Before he could think, his body moved. "Barrier!" His shell of darkness surrounded him as he used a Dark Corridor to put himself directly in front of Neku and Mei. As the Wildflame came close Ombra lept out with a smile, using his body to stop the charge.
"Don't you know better than to take your eyes off a clown? It breaks our hearts." He laughed at his statement, not entirely sure why he found it so funny. He watched as the Shadows approached from behind, seeming to understand Ombra's intent. "You see, the thing about ignoring small fry like me and my family is: we're still around."
He hoped that Neku or Mei realized what he was doing. He had kept the corridor up for a reason. "We can still do things. The best part about being ignored? The person ignoring us never notices." With the final word, the Shadows attacked from every side. None of them had a thought of winning, Ombra was simply using them as a distraction to buy time for his comrades behind him.

“Tch —how annoyingly dull…”
The flames flickered and roared, the heat becoming unbearable to a point. Unfazed by the action behind it, it seemed the Wildflame was dead-set on Ombra, who had proven to be more than enough of a nuisance. The flames grew stronger and stronger, a blink of light hidden beneath the roaring fire, and then suddenly, the steps of someone approaching.
From within the nurtured fire stepped a girl, around the same age as Mei —perhaps even a bit younger. Her long blonde hair was held in a long ponytail behind her, hardly hiding her angered red eyes beneath the blonde locks. Her orange yukata seemed to be the flames themselves as she tamed them with a pair of fans, before unleashing Dance of Fire as means to trap the trio within the raging sea of flames.
“I didn’t want to step in, but you’re just getting increasingly annoying…” the girl groaned, “I’ll give you two options —either you step aside and disappear from my sight this instant, or I’ll sunder you into ash.” “That’s…!”
Mei froze in place, looking straight at their enemy. She didn’t know who she was, but nevertheless, the girl in front was really dangerous. Neku grit his teeth, unsure on how to deal with things, but unwilling to run away. Still, he’d dropped his sword earlier, and without it, there was so much he could do.
Did they even stand a winning chance? Maybe not.
“…” the girl raised her chin, perking up only slightly, “Ah… So, here’s where you ran to?” she asked, looking at Mei, “Or should I say your will? Hmph… I don’t care what the consequences are or will be —you’re a nuisance just by showing up. Allow me the favor and disappear!”
Aiming her fans at Mei, the girl was once more surrounded in fire. It didn’t take long for the powerful Meltdown spell to shot forward, surprisingly fast. Pushing Neku aside, Mei didn’t hesitate a second —grabbing onto her Keyblade in the blink of an eye, Mei drew a circle around her in a hurry, casting her Reflection to repel the spell back. The girl dispelled the flames effortlessly, yet was still shocked at the audacity her enemy had.
Neku looked shocked, yet managed to stand up quickly, ready to continue on fighting albeit it with his lack of weapon. Mei, gasping for air, was also ready to fight, yet it didn’t look like she’d handle it for much.
“Tch… So, that’s how it’ll be…? Fine. I may not like a messy job, but I suppose nothing will get done with you around…”
The flames became stronger, entrapping the group in an arena surrounded by fire, with the girl as their sole enemy. The Wildflame stood elegantly behind her, ready to aid her orders in the blink of an eye, to get rid of her enemies.
It didn’t look like an easy fight, but no one had a choice!

“I didn’t want to step in, but you’re just getting increasingly annoying…” Ombra clasped his hands to his chest, his demeanor now confident and playful. "Aw, miss, you're really breaking my heart now." The man's formal tone was almost mocking, while an obviously mischievous grin formed on his face.
He barely had time to react once the blonde girl let loose her spell. Mei, however, deflected it with ease. Unfortunately, Mei's current weapon caused waves of fear, disgust, and general unease to crash over Ombra. There was something about the giant key that caused the entirety of his being to internally scream 'DANGER'.
The man did his best to shake it off. This wasn't the time to lose focus. Between Neku's lack of weapon, Mei's assumed fatigue, and the ring of fire roaring around the trio. Ombro racked his brain on what to do. He could really only think of one thing, but he didn't want to leave the other two.
Scanning the area, the hybrid had an idea.
Summoning a Dark Corridor, Ombra ran through at full speed. The portal opened behind the Wildflame, letting Ombra run out and slam his entire body into the spirit and hopefully the woman in front of it.
He looked up from where he landed. "Mei, Neku, run, fight, dance, I don't really care, just do SOMETHING!"
