(This is a "short" story, and I plan on sharing more of these to help build my characters. So please, enjoy!)
(WARNING! Blood, torture, extreme violence)
“How’s it going, Jack?”
The boy groaned, focused solely on the screen in front of him, the light flickering softly as he typed away, trying to get the information he was after. The voice of his unit’s leader dimly echoed in his ears, as Jack tunnel-visioned on the work at hand.
“Hey, Jack?!” a female voice echoed, somewhat bitter, “C’mon —we don’t have all day!”
“I’m almost finished…” the boy mumbled back.
“How long, then, Liz?”
“It’s almost completely downloaded” another female voice replied through the unit’s coms —a much younger and even childish voice, “Shouldn’t take a minute.”
“Tch —I knew we had to take a more experienced Navi…” the unit leader’s voice groaned, “What about everyone else?”
“I’m heading back to you, Brandon —I got what we needed” a male voice replied, “Y’know I don’t like laggin’ back.”
“Melissa?”
“I’m just waiting on Jack.”
“I told you I’m almost finished!” Jack pouted, silent, “If ya keep talkin’, I ain’t gonna be workin’ any faster!”
Melissa huffed back as her sole reply, but Jack paid it no mind, given that the teen’s focus was the screen in front of him. Lines and lines of text, numbers and floor plans —all going quickly through as Jack copied the data into his own devices. He smirked as the last pieces of data were copied, indicating a job well-done. Grabbing his things quickly and placing them into his fenny pack, the boy was made a blur as he exited the room he was in.
Their mission for that day was to gather the floor plans and information held in a military building, after Elena learnt about hostages being kept there —people that were apprehended for thinking differently. Having worked for the Twilight Brigade well over a year and a half, Jack had gotten the hang of things rather quickly, and knew exactly what to search for and what to leave behind.
Obviously, his own perks helped in getting ahead from most veterans, traits that made him a rather valuable member.
He ran through metal hallways completely in the dark, moving almost instinctively through the corridors. His visor was what guided him, showing him the path within the pitch-black darkness. He smirked as he saw a woman with hazelnut short hair, her camo uniform helping to blend in with the darkness —Melissa. The woman frowned, shaking her head as she joined Jack in his race, the two aiming to meet back with the rest of their unit and call it a day.
Brandon and the other member —Usher— were waiting for them at a crux, smirking faintly as they saw the pair running towards them. With everyone there, they could leave safely. The leader was first to guide, his own visor helping to learn the layout of the map in order to guide everyone out. With their mission done, they could return to HQ and share the information to land a definitive coup d’état.
“Liz, where to?” the leader asked their Navigator.
“Right side” Liz replied, calmly, “From that corridor, is a straight way out.”
“At least you’re useful for something…”
Jack smirked, already more than used to Brandon’s demeanor when it came to Navigators. He trusted them, sure, but he always managed to find one flaw he would nitpick. The only reason why the unit didn’t have a set Nav was because of him —nothing else. He couldn’t help but wonder, however, how he’d agreed to be the one helping Jack’s sister past the practice sessions in order to properly enroll.
Was it solely because Brandon cherished Jack that he’d put himself willing to, or was it something else? In the end, it didn’t matter, since their focus at that time was nothing related to that. Shoving those thoughts at the back of his mind, the teen focused on the task happening at the time —getting out.
Following Brandon as they ran through the corridor was simple enough, easy to follow thanks to the visor and the Navigator’s directions. At that time, Jack had already gotten used to the dynamic of a voice chirping in his ear, going silent every now and then to then burst out in full volume. And so, he didn’t think it odd when he couldn’t hear Liz’s voice anymore —it was just a natural thing to do, in order to avoid being spotted because of one’s voice.
“What the—!?”
“Hey, what’s this about?!”
Jack came to a halt, shocked to see a dead end in front of the unit. Brandon scowled as he tried reaching for Liz, static as the only reply to his comm device. Usher stood beside him, looking around in a bewildered daze as he tried to find any way out. Melissa began to panic, unsure of what was going on, and Jack, although shocked to find out what had happened, was trying to find any way to get out of the labyrinth that was the building.
“Dammit —why isn’t she answering?!” Brandon shouted, “That bitch better not—!”
“Let’s focus on getting out” Jack said, startling the rest, “If this’s a dead end, then we find another way out!”
“Jack…”
“I’m sure I saw a crossroad not long ago —we can try getting out through there.”
“It’s not the one where we met, right?” Melissa asked, receiving a shake of the head, “Then…”
“Lead the way, Jack” Brandon said with a cold and strong tone, “We need to get out before they find out we’re here —that’s a priority.”
“Right!”
Jack turned around, his gaze focused on finding the rest a path. Now solely focused on getting his team out, his eyes were looking to close attention to where the exit would be. Trying to remember the path they’d taken in, he tried going back their same steps, even if said steps were already being covered by their enemy.
It was their only way out now that they were cut off from their Navigator.
The way seemed to be forever, spastically trying to get out from the maze into the open area of the city, but no matter where they turned, they came across a dead end. Soon enough, Jack was also panicking. From confidence, he turned to despair, frantically searching for a way out, but the teen couldn’t find anything that could help.
It didn’t take long before they were spotted by their enemy, as indicated by the rushing steps headed their way. Cornered with no way out, it took no time for the soldiers to apprehend them and knock them unconscious. Jack watched as both Brandon and Usher were knocked unconscious by the soldiers hitting them on the back of the head with their guns, before something hit his own head on the back, knocking him to the ground.
“Alice…”
